How the UN tricked the Palestinians on November 22, 1967 and passed Resolution 242
UN Resolution 242 (1967) called for Israeli withdrawal from “territories occupied” in the Six-Day War—but its ambiguous wording allowed differing interpretations. While Palestinians saw it as demanding full Israeli withdrawal, the UN and key powers (like the U.S. and UK) later emphasized it did not require a full pullback, enabling Israel to retain some land in negotiations. Many Palestinians viewed this as a diplomatic trick, as the resolution’s enforcement relied on stalled peace talks, leaving their demands unresolved.
