HISTORY OF EARTHQUAKE TECHNOLOGIES

 

The earthquake bomb, or seismic bomb, was a concept that was invented by the British aeronautical engineer Barnes Wallis before World War II and subsequently developed and used during the war against strategic targets in Europe.

A declassified government report (96 MB file) featured in the newspaper article below shows that a tsunami bomb was created as a potential weapon during WWII in a program code-named Project Seal. There is little doubt that this tsunami weapon was further developed and refined over the ensuing decades, though all documents related to current developments of the project are almost certainly still classified. Though it may seem far-fetched to imagine military involvement, these documents and reports raise serious questions about the recent tsunami in Japan and the December 26, 2004 tsunami in Indonesia. 

The many layers of intense secrecy both in the government and military result in very few people being aware of the gruesome capabilities for death and destruction that have been developed over the years. Were it not for the below article in New Zealand's leading newspaper, the public would never have known that a tsunami bomb had been created many decades ago. Tsunami bomb - NZ's devastating war secret

Top-secret wartime experiments were conducted off the coast of Auckland to perfect a tidal wave bomb, declassified files reveal.

An Auckland University professor seconded to the Army set off a series of underwater explosions triggering mini-tidal waves at Whangaparaoa in 1944 and 1945.

Professor Thomas Leech's work was considered so significant that United States defence chiefs said that if the project had been completed before the end of the war it could have played a role as effective as that of the atom bomb.

Details of the tsunami bomb, known as Project Seal, are contained in 53-year-old documents released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Papers stamped "top secret" show the US and British military were eager for Seal to be developed in the post-war years too. They even considered sending Professor Leech to Bikini Atoll to view the US nuclear tests and see if they had any application to his work.

He did not make the visit, although a member of the US board of assessors of atomic tests, Dr Karl Compton, was sent to New Zealand.

"Dr Compton is impressed with Professor Leech's deductions on the Seal project and is prepared to recommend to the Joint Chiefs of Staff that all technical data from the test relevant to the Seal project should be made available to the New Zealand Government for further study by Professor Leech," said a July 1946 letter from Washington to Wellington.

Professor Leech, who died in his native Australia in 1973, was the university's dean of engineering from 1940 to 1950.

News of his being awarded a CBE ["Commander of the Order of the British Empire", a grade in the Order of the British Empire] in 1947 for research on a weapon led to speculation in newspapers around the world about what was being developed.

Though high-ranking New Zealand and US officers spoke out in support of the research, no details of it were released because the work was on-going.

A former colleague of Professor Leech, Neil Kirton, told the Weekend Herald that the experiments involved laying a pattern of explosives underwater to create a tsunami.

Small-scale explosions were carried out in the Pacific and off Whangaparaoa, which at the time was controlled by the Army.

It is unclear what happened to Project Seal once the final report was forwarded to Wellington Defence Headquarters late in the 1940s.

The bomb was never tested on a full scale, and Mr Kirton doubts that Aucklanders would have noticed the trials.

Thailand and Cambodia truce agreement comes into effect

A truce agreement between Thailand and Cambodia came into effect in the early hours of Tuesday, testing whether it will halt five days of open combat that have engulfed their jungle-clad frontier.

Both sides agreed an “unconditional” ceasefire would start at midnight on Monday to end battling over a smattering of ancient temples in disputed zones along their 800-kilometre (500-mile) border.

In Cambodia’s Samraong city — 20 kilometres from the border — an AFP journalist heard a steady drumbeat of artillery strikes throughout Monday, before blast sounds stopped in the 30 minutes leading up to midnight, with the lull continuing for 30 minutes after.

Elsewhere, Cambodia’s Preah Vihear province, which has seen some of the most intense combat, was still quiet 20 minutes after the truce was scheduled to begin, its governor Kim Rithy said on Facebook.

Jets, rockets and artillery have killed at least 38 people since Thursday and displaced nearly 300,000 more — prompting intervention from US President Donald Trump over the weekend.

The flare-up was the deadliest since violence raged sporadically from 2008-2011 over the territory, claimed by both because of a vague demarcation made by Cambodia’s French colonial administrators in 1907.

The peace deal is set to see military commanders from both sides meet at 07:00am (0000 GMT), before a cross-border committee is convened in Cambodia to further salve tensions on August 4.

“When I heard the news I was so happy because I miss my home and my belongings that I left behind,” Phean Neth told AFP on Monday evening at a sprawling camp for Cambodian evacuees on a temple site away from the fighting.

“I am so happy that I can’t describe it,” said the 45-year-old.

A joint statement from both countries, as well as Malaysia which hosted the peace talks, said the ceasefire was “a vital first step towards de-escalation and the restoration of peace and security”.

A spokesman for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said in a statement Monday evening that “he urges both countries to respect the agreement fully and to create an environment conducive to addressing long-standing issues and achieving lasting peace”.

Both sides are courting Trump for trade deals to avert his threat of eye-watering tariffs, and the US State Department said its officials had been “on the ground” to shepherd peace talks.

The joint statement said China also had “active participation” in the talks, hosted by Malaysian Prime Minister and ASEAN bloc chair Anwar Ibrahim in his country’s administrative capital Putrajaya.

Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet thanked Trump for his “decisive” support, while his counterpart, Thai acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, said it should be “carried out in good faith by both sides”.

“If they say they’ll stop firing, they must stop completely,” said 43-year-old Thai evacuee Prapakarn Samruamjit in the city of Surin.

On the eve of the talks, Thailand’s military said Cambodian snipers were camped in one of the contested temples, and accused Phnom Penh of surging troops along the border and hammering Thai territory with rockets.

It said there was fighting at seven areas in the rural region, marked by a ridge of hills surrounded by wild jungle and fields where locals farm rubber and rice.

Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn marked his 73rd birthday on Monday, but a notice in the country’s Royal Gazette said public celebrations scheduled for Bangkok’s Grand Palace had been cancelled amid the strife.

Trump has threatened both countries with high levies in his global tariff blitz unless they agree to independent trade deals — but said he would “look forward” to signing them once “peace is at hand”.

Each side had already agreed to a truce in principle, while accusing the other of undermining peace efforts and trading allegations about the use of cluster bombs and targeting of hospitals.

Thailand says 11 of its soldiers and 14 civilians have been killed, while Cambodia has confirmed only eight civilian and five military deaths.

However, the Thai military said it has returned the bodies of 12 Cambodian soldiers killed in combat.

More than 138,000 people have fled Thailand’s border regions, while around 140,000 have been driven from their homes in Cambodia.

‘Moral Cowardice’: Sonia Gandhi Slams Modi Govt’s Silence on Gaza Crisis, Calls It Betrayal of Constitutional Values

Congress parliamentary party leader Sonia Gandhi has strongly criticised the Modi government for staying silent on Israel’s military actions in Gaza. She said that Israel’s attacks amount to genocide and called the Indian government’s silence a “cowardly betrayal” of the country’s constitutional values.

In an article published in the Hindi newspaper Dainik Jagran, Sonia Gandhi wrote that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on the suffering of the people in Gaza is “deeply disappointing” and shows “moral cowardice.” She urged him to speak clearly and firmly in support of the values India has always stood for.

She condemned the brutal attacks by Hamas on October 7, 2023, saying no one should defend such violence or the holding of Israeli hostages. However, she said that the Israeli government’s response has gone far beyond self-defence and has become criminal.

“More than 55,000 Palestinians, including 17,000 children, have been killed. Residential buildings, hospitals and basic infrastructure in Gaza have been destroyed. The social structure of Gaza has been shattered,” she wrote.

She said the Israeli army has blocked the supply of medicines, food, and fuel to Gaza and even fired on civilians who were trying to collect food. She called this a deliberate strategy of forced starvation, which she said is a crime against humanity. “Even the Israeli army has had to admit this horrifying truth,” she added.

Sonia Gandhi said that many experts believe the Israeli military campaign in Gaza is an effort to ethnically cleanse Palestinians. She compared the current situation to the 1948 Naqba, when Palestinians were forced out of their homes. She accused Israel of acting out of a colonial mindset and claimed that some of this violence is being done for the benefit of real estate tycoons.

She criticised the United Nations for failing to stop the attacks and said that the UN Security Council has not imposed any punishment on Israel. She also pointed out that Israel has ignored the International Court of Justice’s order from January 2024 to stop acts of genocide and allow humanitarian aid.

She said that countries like South Africa and Brazil have shown courage by holding Israel accountable. France has recognised Palestine, and Britain and Canada have imposed sanctions on Israeli leaders. Even inside Israel, some voices are now admitting war crimes are being committed.

“In the middle of this humanitarian disaster, it is shameful that India has remained silent,” she wrote. “India was once a leader in global justice, standing against colonialism and apartheid. Today, by staying silent, we are betraying that history.”

She reminded readers that in 1974, under Indira Gandhi’s leadership, India became the first non-Arab country to recognise the Palestine Liberation Organisation. In 1988, India also officially recognised the State of Palestine.

Sonia Gandhi said India has always supported a two-state solution, where both Israel and Palestine can exist peacefully. She urged Prime Minister Modi to speak out, saying, “The world is watching, and the Global South is looking to India for leadership. It’s time for India to stand up for justice and peace.”

Famine Expert: Israel’s Starvation of Gaza Most ‘Minutely Designed and Controlled’ Since WWII

“This is preventable starvation,” said Alex de Waal. “It is entirely man-made.”

A leading global authority on famine on Monday accused Israel of orchestrating a carefully planned campaign of mass starvation in the Gaza Strip, remarks that came amid a steadily rising death toll from malnutrition caused by the 654-day U.S.-backed Israeli siege and obliteration of the Palestinian enclave.

“I’ve been working on this topic for more than four decades, and there is no case since World War II of starvation that is being so minutely designed and controlled,” Alex de Waal, executive director of the World Peace Foundation at Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, told Al Jazeera.

“This is preventable starvation. It is entirely man-made,” de Waal added. “And every stage of this has been predicted, and at every stage action could have been taken—by Israel, by the international authorities, [the] international community, those who back Israel—to prevent what is happening now… Those steps have simply not been taken.”

The Gaza Health Ministry—whose casualty figures have been deemed accurate by Israeli military officials and a likely undercount by multiple peer-reviewed studies—said Tuesday that 15 more Palestinians, including four children, died from malnutrition over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of starvation deaths in the coastal enclave to at least 101, including 80 children, since October 2023. The ministry said that 21 Gaza children have starved to death over the past three days alone.

When combined with lack of medicine, malnutrition has claimed hundreds of Palestinian lives in Gaza, according to officials there.

“I am so hungry,” Ruwaida Amer, a 30-year-old Gaza woman, wrote for +972 Magazine Monday. “We are starving. My body is breaking down. My mother is collapsing from exhaustion. My cousin cheats death every day for a morsel of aid. Gaza’s children are dying in front of our eyes, and we are powerless to help them.”

Another Gaza woman, Amina Badir, told Amer while clutching her starving 3-year-old: “Tell me how to save my daughter Rahaf from death. For a week she’s eaten nothing but a single spoon of lentils each day.”

“She’s suffering from malnutrition. There’s no treatment, no milk at the hospital,” Badir added. “They’ve taken away her right to live. I see death in her eyes.”

Gaza medical officials say 17,000 children are severely malnourished in the strip. According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, also known as the IPC scale, 85% of Gaza’s people are in Phase 5, defined as such “an extreme deprivation of food” that “starvation, death, destitution, and extremely critical levels of acute malnutrition are or will likely be evident.”

The “complete siege” imposed on Gaza immediately following the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel has fueled widespread starvation and disease, and has been condemned as a war crime. The International Criminal Court last year ordered the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged murder and forced starvation of Gazans. The International Court of Justice is also weighing a genocide case filed against Israel by South Africa.

Amid intense international pressure, Israel partially lifted its siege of Gaza in May. However, de Waal and others say the move is wholly inadequate to prevent the famine taking hold in the strip.

“The partial lifting was not to bring in the kind of humanitarian program that we have been familiar with as humanitarians over the decades,” de Waal told Al Jazeera Monday. “It was to bring in a type of rationed program that is simply an arm of the Israeli military.”

Israel has also come under intense criticism for its method of delivering aid in Gaza via the U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, whose distribution points have been the sites of near-daily massacres. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) officers and troops say they were ordered to shoot and shell desperate aid-seekers at GHF distribution centers. Officials said at least 10 aid-seekers were killed on Tuesday alone.

“The killing of civilians seeking aid in Gaza is indefensible.”

“As of July 21, we have recorded 1,054 people killed in Gaza while trying to get food; 766 of them were killed in the vicinity of GHF sites and 288 near [United Nations] and other humanitarian organizations’ aid convoys,” U.N. human rights spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan told Agence France-Presse.

Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, said Tuesday that “the killing of civilians seeking aid in Gaza is indefensible,” adding that the “IDF must stop killing people at distribution points.”

Overall, at least 59,029 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza since October 2023, most of them women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. More than 142,000 others have been wounded, and at least 14,000 more are missing and presumed dead and buried beneath the rubble of hundreds of thousands of bombed buildings.

Other international humanitarian experts also weighed in on the growing Gaza famine, with Michael Fakhri, the U.N. special rapporteur on the right to food, telling Al Jazeera Monday that the “man-made” starvation in the strip “is a war crime.”

“Israel has been using aid as a way to bait civilians and has been killing civilians who have been seeking aid,” he said. “What we’re seeing now is the most horrific stage of Israel’s 20-month starvation campaign.”

Jan Egeland, secretary general of the Norwegian Refugee Council, told Reuters Tuesday that “our last tent, our last food parcel, our last relief items have been distributed. There is nothing left.”

“Hundreds of truckloads have been sitting in warehouses or in Egypt or elsewhere, and costing our Western European donors a lot of money, but they are blocked from coming in,” he explained. “That’s why we are so angry. Because our job is to help.”

“Israel is not yielding,” Egeland added. “They just want to paralyze our work.”

Children’s bodies are still growing and developing, so they have higher nutritional needs. Children have less reserve fat and muscle mass compared to adults, making it harder to cope with lack of food. Plus their immune systems are still developing adding to susceptibility to the impacts of malnutrition.   

The process develops in stages. After fat stores are depleted, muscle is wasted for protein, which why you see emaciated bodies. Finally organs are depleted resulting in failure and death. There is a point of no return whereby internal organs are sufficiently wrecked even if nourishment is delivered.

Muscle mass is wasted, this little girl is down to her organs and the final phase of death by starvation.

The level of suffering in later stages of starvation is very intense. The individual suffers from cognitive impairment and body weakness making going out to scavenge food impossible especially for small children. Adding to the difficulties we have ambushes.
